Scientific Focus

UNVEIL advances how we “see” inside artworks by unifying cutting-edge nondestructive evaluation (NDE)—terahertz imaging, ultrasound, infrared thermography—with spectral and hyperspectral surface imaging. We concentrate on two major artwork families—paintings and 3D objects (sculptures, ceramics)—and pursue two pillars: (OBJ1) develop and optimise NDE and signal processing for stratigraphy and defect detection; (OBJ2) fuse multimodal data and deliver interactive visualisation through Digital Twins and AR-ready outputs for experts and the public. This programme tightly couples engineering with heritage science to improve diagnosis and restoration decision-making.

Work Package 1 – Nondestructive Evaluation

We design, refine, and benchmark subsurface techniques tailored to cultural heritage, then validate them on mock-ups and in the field. For paintings, we develop super-resolution THz stratigraphy, pulse-compression thermography with multi-wavelength LED excitation, and contact-free air-coupled ultrasonics. For 3D artworks, we study THz tomography feasibility, advance 3D ultrasonic imaging, and explore laser ultrasonics for surface depth profiling—while coordinating comparative studies across modalities and delivering open-source tools and feasibility demonstrators.

Work Package 2 – Fusion & Visualization

We integrate surface and subsurface evidence into a single, reliable view of an object. The team co-registers and calibrates multi-/hyper-spectral imaging, X-ray fluorescence with THz, ultrasound, and thermography; develops feature extraction and fusion rules; and implements Digital Twins that support expert analysis and interactive storytelling. Outputs include open-source material-mapping suites, an integrated visualisation platform for conservators, and AR experiences that make complex diagnostics accessible.

Work Package 3 – Heritage Science

We keep research grounded in real conservation needs. Heritage partners coordinate shared mock-ups and select representative artworks; evaluate WP1/WP2 methods; steer user-centred Digital Twin design; and synthesise guidance and good practices for conservators, restorers, and museum stakeholders—ensuring UNVEIL’s innovations translate into day-to-day decision-making.
